I lived and served in Korea from 1956 ~ 1997 as a missionary of the Methodist Church. Beginning in the early 1970s I became increasingly involved in the struggle from Democracy in Korea. I assisted the Rev. George Ogle and Father Jim Sinnot when they faced deportation from Korea. I was a regular participant in the Thursday prayer meetings for "Prisoners of Conscience." I participated in street demonstrations and attended many trials of political prisoners including former President Kim, Dae Jung. K visited political prisoners and took money, books and other items to them. I channeled many secret documents out of the country and on three occasions I was picked up and interrogated by Korean police and immigration authorities as well as the Korean C.I.A. (Agency for National Planning). Upon the execution of the eight so called "In-Hyuk Dang" members in 1975, I participated in a battle with riot police when they captured one of bodies as we were driving it to church for a memorial service. Later, I joined friends who staged a demonstration in front of the US Embassy to protest American failure to oppose the executions. I wrote numerous reports and articles about the human rights struggle in Korea and assisted Korean friends in doing the same. I also worked to help victims of torture. Beyond this, I worked long hours behind the scenes to help many Korean friends who were engaged in the long struggle for democracy.

My first involvement with the movement for freedom, democracy and human rights in Korea began in 1969 when I was summoned by the Korean C.I.A. and subjected to many months of regular interrogation because of columns Iwas writing for the Chosun Ilbo. I began to understand better some of the harassment my Korean acquaintances and friends were suffering because of their criticisms of military rule in Korea.
Soon after that the pressure upon our friends increased, and in 1972 when the Yushin policies were enacted, my wife and I became more directly involved in the activities of religious and political leaders who were challenging the oppression of the military rulers of South Korea.
My personal involvement included several different typed of activity. First, I made myself available, day and night, to representatives of the world news media in Seoul by meeting with them and giving them information about the views of people who opposed the regime in power. As a part of this involvement I also gave radio and television interviews that were broadcast in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, and several Asian nations.
I also wrote a number of articles that were printed in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, International Herald Tribune and other publications outside Korea. As a direct result of the viewpoints I expressed I was further harassed and interrogated by the K.C.I.A. and the Korean Immigration Service.
During these years, the 1970's and 1980's, I also wrote hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles, many of them openly critical, some of them more subtly critical, of the Korean government's policies and actions. As a result, I was banned from Korean broadcasting and authors were told that I would not be permitted to receive translatiin grants to translate their works into English.
Another of my activities was translating for foreign jounalists when they interviewed opposition political leaders, students, and religious leaders. As a result of doing this, I became closelu acquainted with both Kim Dae Jung and Kim Young Sam. Over the years I translated many of their letters, speeches and other writings, and I interpreted for them in both private and public situations. I was often responsible for transmitting their other opposition leaders. (The Korean government was well aware of this activity, but I was seldom searched entering or leaving Korea. I was however, given thorough searches several times upon entering the United States during those years.)
During the 1970's especially at the time of the Myong Dong Declaration for the Salvation of the Nation, I translated and circulated the document the day it was read and attended the sessions of the trials of the signers, providing simultaneous translation of the proceedings for foreign observers and journalists. My wife and I joined with other missionaries, protestant and Catholic, in sharing information about opposition events in Korea, and also in obtaining aid from abroad for the families of the political prisoners.
As a result of these and other activities my classroom teaching and college duties were monitored and reported to the government, our personal mail was opened read, our telephone was tapped, and my movements were carefully monitored. (At one time the National Police manual of procedures even had my name and personal information in the section instructing officers in the way to deal with foreigners.) My wife and I were kept on three-month residence permits for over four years, and we were subjected to interrogation on several occasions, forced to sign promissory documents in order to remain in Korea(we refused to dmit any wrongdoing), and had our jobs threatened through pressure on the institutions where we worked.
On one occasion deportation orders were processed for me and my wife, along with several other Protestant and Catholic missionaries, but they were not enforced, thanks to the intervention of Cardinal Stephen Kim and the American ambassador. Both my wife and I have experienced many interesting incidents and episodes as a result of paticipating in the struffle for democracy in Korea, but more than anythin else, we are grateful for the association with so many brave Korean friends sho risked so much and were able to triumph in the end and rostore freedom and democracy.

I arrived in Korea in October of 1959, recently married, with the intention of working there until the age of retirement. The April 19th demonstrations the nextspring were my first experience with revolution. The period until the May 16th coup in 1961 was a very uneasy time. It was not until Yushin was declared in the fall of 1972, however, that I began to understand what a militry dictatorship involved. From that time on I participated, together with my husband, in any way I could to support the people in their struggles for human rights.
On Samil Day in 1976 we had a prayer breakfast at our home. That evening the Declaration for the Salvation of the Nation was read by Lee Oojong at the Myongdong Catholic cathedral. Some of the people who signed the declaration were at our home that morning and the document was in the pocket of one of persons who attended. All were either imprisoned or placed under house arrest. Since a number of the signers had children in school, some of the Presbyterian and Methodist missionaries helped to secure funds from the United States to help pay their schols fees. Our home was the place where the money was brought until it was picked up by one of the Three Musketeers, the name we gave to the three women who delivered the money to the familied of the political prisoners. Each time a strict accounting of the money was provided.
That Christmas I made eighteen fruit cakes for the people in prison as an experession fo our concern for them. We tried to do the same thing the following year, but the prison guards would not allow the cakes into the prisons. From time to time I cooked food and tried to deliver it to Tonggyo Dong. Sometimes the police guards would allow it to be delivered, but at other times they refused.
I often went to Galilee Church, sometimes to accompany foreign guests, and I also attended the Thursday prayer meetings at the Christian Building. our home was always open to the families of the prisoners and to the people dedicated to the restoration of democracy and human rights in Korea. In the fall fo 1982 we celebrated Lee Hee-ho's 60th birthday at our home. Her husband was in prison at that time. Their three sons came with their wives. It was slways our goal to express support for those struggling for freedom and democracy in Korea, and to provide any assistance within our abilities.

Our family (myself, my wife Sue, our four children) arrived in Korea on
September 6, 1966 and departed 16 years later in the spring of 1982. We
were appointed as Fraternal Workers to Korea by the United Presbyterian
Church, USA, and were placed under the supervision and direction of the
Presbyterian Church of Korea. From 1966 to 1968 I was a full-time student
at the Korean Language Institute of Yonsei University. After graduating in
the spring of 1968 I along with my wife, was assigned to do student ministry
on the campus of Kyung Hee University in Seoul in cooperation with the
Korean Student Christian Federation (KSCF). In 1970 I began an outreach
ministry with the college student department of Youngnak Presbyterian Church
in Seoul, and shortly after that joined the staff of the Christian
Literature Society of Korea (CLS). While at Youngnak I was, for several
years, translator and interpreter from Korean to English during the Sunday
morning services. I continued to be involved in student and CLS ministries
until our departure in 1982. For several years during that 12 year period I
worked in the office of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of
Korea.
While engaged in these activities I was from 1968 on deeply involved in the
efforts on the part of Korean Christians for social justice, human rights
and democratic reform. (See Democracy Movement involvement below.)
Assignments in Seoul, Korea, September, 1966 - 1982:
Fraternal worker, missionary, Presbyterian Church, USA
Kyung Hee University, 1966 - 1968, taught English As a Second Language
Aeranwon agency, 1968 - 1982 residential rehabilitation program for former
prostitutes until 1972; later and presently a residential program for unwed
mothers and their children.
Ewha Women's University Social Service Center- 1974 - 1978 - worked with
families through Christian children's Fund living in the mountain low
income area behind the university.
1980 - 1982 - International Human Assistance Program - social worker working
with Amerasian teenagers and their mothers, case management before they
were given sponsorship to immigrate to the USA after US bill was passed.
Democracy Movement involvement: We both participated in the following
actions.
Group of Fifty - formed approximately 1967, US expatriates opposed to US
government's involvement in condoning repressive and dictatorial government.
Specifically we met with US Embassy officials on use of US financed
equipment against Korean students demonstrating against restrictions on
freedoms. We met a number of times with visiting senators and
representatives for the same purpose. The Group of Fifty evolved into what
we came to call the "Monday Night Group" which met almost weekly over a
period of more than ten years.

Monday Night Group

1. We supported political prisoners and their families in a variety of ways:
Raising and distributing funds to prisoners and their families.
2. Visiting political prisoners with gifts of money, food and blankets.
3. Participated in the Thursday Morning Prayer meetings at The Christian
Building, Chong No 5 Ga.
4. We joined in rallies and demonstrations organized and conducted by
concerned Korean Christians.
5. We continued to meet and correspond with the representatives of our
various governments.
6. We supported so called "PRP" political prisoners; specifically were
present with other missionaries in the courtroom when the Supreme Court
upheld the sentence of execution. About a week after the sentence was
carried out, Randy together with six other Roman Catholic and Protestant
missionaries, participated in a silent prayer demonstration in front of the
US Embassy to protest the executions. This was on April 16, 1975. That
evening the protesters were taken to the Korean Immigration Headquarters for
interrogation, and after being strongly warned were released.

Sue had returned to the US for graduate school. On April 16, she joined a
group of US representatives from different major denominations in a
demonstration in front of the Korean Consulate in New York City. We
continued to keep in touch with the wives after the execution until the time
we left Korea in 1982.
7. We both supported the work of the Urban Industrial Mission, working with
Rev. Cho Chi Sung, Rev. Cho Sung Hyuk Young Dung Po and Rev. Chung, (do not
know his full name).
We raised funds to underwrite research on the effects of working conditions
and requirements on the eyes of young women working in US owned electronic
industries - Control Data and Fairchild Wheeler. We confronted the US
manager with the results showing damage to the women's vision get factory
workers eyes tested at Fairchild Wheeler and Control Data plants, met with
CEO and challenged the companies to fairly compensate the workers and
working conditions.
8. Sue took a trip to Kwangju with Esther Park, YWCA Seoul director,
visiting the staff of the YWCA, Kwangju. We listened to their shocking
story when the students hid from the Korean military in their building. We
then took a trip out to the unmarked graves of people who had been killed in
the 1980 demonstrations. We left Kwangju, hearbroken and somber, remembering
back what we had been told and saw with our own eyes.

Born on July 6th, 1937 studied after highschoolesamination in Kiel at Christian Albrechts-University medicine and decided later to join ARD-NDR Norddeutscher Rundfunk & Television Studio in the British Crown Colony for German TV-Nwtwork in South-and Far-East Asia, covering Cambodia and Vietnam where I got injured in Saigon City during the Tet-offensive, spring 1969. Since a new Studio was build up for only Far-East Asia in delegation to Japan I visited ROK/South Korea several times, recording the events that occurred under the Presidency of Park Chung Hee and his following dictators.
Since early times starting from the year 1968 under the dictatorship of Pres. Park Chung Hee I always Kept an eye on the oppressed opposition and her leaders such as the late Presidents, Kin Young Sam and Kin Dae-Jung and their friends. Among other things I also had been under housearrest together with Kim Young Sam in his house where ports all over Asia the May 18th Kwangju Uprising in 1980 was one of the most important events in my journalistic work-a historical moment and political changing point for Korea.
This might have been the reason, why I, as a foreign journalist, had my own bad experience in Seoul at Kwanghamun Intersection, when I was beaten up and injured seriously by plainclothes-and riotpolice in Nov. 28th 1986.

Born on Sep. 26th, 1937 studied after highschoolexamination, in Kiel at Christian Albrechts-University medicine and sports. After an interval of three years studying at Leopold Ludwig University in Insbruck I got my medical doctorate at University of Kiet. After that I worked at several hospitals in Germany and Switzerland at gynaecological, orthopaedic and internal wards as surgeon. In 1983, I specialized in Anaesthesy and Intensivecare medicine for emergency. Since then I worked at the General Red Cross Hospital in Ratzeburg.

There are three projects I have involved together with my colleagues around the world to support to the Korean democratization in 1970~1980.

1. To support the case of Park Hyung Kyu, Kim Kwan Sook and Cho Mok San, ? , who were imprisoned in spring of 1973 after the Easter Event(부활절예배사건), I have organized an ecumenical visiting team to Korea to express international solidarity and to testify those friends who were captured have done the work out of their conscience and the concern of Christian understanding of human right among the working people in Korea. The members of the team consisted of Rev. George Todd, then the director of Urban Work in United Presbyterian Church in U.S.A. , Rev. ?  , the director of the East Asia Office of National Council of Churches in U.S.A. and myself.  At that time I was the moderator of Urban and Industrial Mission Committe of World Council of Churches. While they were in prison, I have made the effort to put the one full page advertizement in New York Times to publisize the issue and called the attention of th people around the world.

2. In order to support the case of Kim Chi Ha who was also imprisoned around that time, I have organized a campaign to recommend Kim Chi Ha for Nobel Prize in 1974. After collecting over 400 signatures of lawyers and academic Professors and Church leaders, my wife and I have made a special trip to both Sweden and Norway to present the signatures to the Literature Prize in Sweden and Peace Prize in Norway. This was a voluntary work without no offcial support of any organization. So I have borrowed ¥500,000 from my university to cover the travel expenses. I have atarted this project recognizing the Korean goverment was very sensitive to the international public opinion.

3. Immediately after Kim Dae Chung was kidnaped by KCIA in a hotel, Tokyo, an informal group of academic scholars and religious leaders was organized in Kyoto with having leadership of three distinguished leaders of university circle in Kyoto such as Dr. Hachiro Yuasa, former president of Doshiha University president of International University in Tokyo, Dr. Hiroshi Suekawa, former president of Ritsumei Kan University, and Dr, Etsuji Sumiya, then the Chancellor of Doshisha University. The chief organizer of the group was Prof. Kei Sumiya of Doshisha University. The members were not so large in number 30~40. They met from time to time at Korean Restrant in Kyoto to reflect the meaning of the incident and to think the appropriate action to release Mr Kin Dae Chung and to recover the justice and human right. The major effort the public appeal through the news papers indicating the regret that the incident happened in Japan, also it aknowledged the responsibility on the part of Japanese goverment and people in relation to this issue in particular at Kore and Japan relationship in General. The fact that the proup had the distingished cultural leaders in Kyoto as the head made the appeals often appeared in the news papers credible It continued about ten years. I served as one of the presidents together with Professor Jiro Iinuma of Kyoto University.

Linda Jones, with her husband, Rev. David Jones, were Frontier Interns in Mission in Korea, sent by the United Presbyterian Church, USA, from October, 1972-October, 1974. Rev. Jones worked at the Institute for Urban Studies and Development at Yonsei University and Linda worked with the Korean Student Christian Federation and the Urban Industrial Mission at Yeung Dong-Po and Chungju. Linda wrote a study book about Human Rights Issues around the world for KSCF. She also was deeply involved with the international media and the flow of information into and out of Korea regarding the democratic movement. She was an active member of the "Monday Night Group" of foreigners residing in Korea who met secretly each week in support of Korean Christian colleagues who were taking great risks against the Yushin system. The Monday Night Group wrote informative "Fact Sheets" for the foreign press and the international church, signed petitions to U.S. Congress, supported people in hiding, documented human rights abuses and labor struggles, etc. After returning to the U.S.A., Linda established and co-coordinated the Church Committee for Human Rights in Asia (CCHRA) for nineteen (19) years. This NGO did education and action regarding the Korean, Taiwan, and Philippine struggles for democracy. These three countries had repressive governments, massive U.S. military and political support, and very active, domestic popular religious and secular movements against the regimes. The Chicago-based CCHRA supported Korean labor struggles, brought stockholder resolutions against repressive U.S. companies doing business in Korea, led demonstrations at the south Korean consulate, published a respected monthly newsletter, worked with the U.S. media, did numerous educational events in churches and schools, and took five study groups to Korea to support the
movement and to learn about the struggle. The CCHRA hosted many Koreans from the democratic movement who came to Chicago, including former political prisoners, UIM activists, women church leaders, and Kim, Dae-Jung. The CCHRA raised money to support the Christian movements for democracy in Korea. The CCHRA was a member of the Korea Support Network, a U.S. nationwide network of Korean-American and non-Korean organizations supporting the democ= ratic=20 movement in Korea. This network waged campaigns re reunification, political prisoners, against Team Spirit exercises, specific labor struggles, and lobbied the U.S. Congress for a more enlightened U.S. foreign policy toward Korea. After the CCHRA closed in the early1990~99s, Linda studied for and received the M.Div. degree at McCormick Theological Seminary and is committed to ministry in U.S. prisons.
